Major Tax Changes for Year 2009

Standard Deduction Amount

For 2009, taxpayers who are age 65 and older or who are blind receive an additional standard deduction amount that is added to the basic standard deduction shown in the table below. The additional amount for married individuals and surviving spouses is $1,100, for married filing separately is $1,100, and for single or head of household individuals is $1,400. Two additional amounts are allowed to an individual who is both over 65 and blind.

Generally, to qualify for the additional standard deduction amount, a taxpayer must be age 65 (or blind) before the close of the tax year.
